Estimate before you enter

Look at the answer's size before touching a key. Rounding 14,392 to 14,000 and 28 to 30 puts the division near 470, which is enough to catch a slip: if the calculator says 5,140 or 514, you know the entry went wrong without recomputing. Estimation also earns its keep on multiple-choice questions where the options sit far apart; a rough answer often identifies one of them on its own.

Percentage chains in one pass

Discount-on-discount questions tempt you into retyping intermediate results. The percent key removes most of that. To apply a 12% discount and then an 8% discount on what remains, enter 4800 × 88 % = and then × 92 % =. Long division is where entries get long, so divide in stages when the numbers do not fit. Compute a partial quotient, store it with MS, and bring it back with MR for the next stage. Reciprocal work helps too: dividing by 25 is multiplying by 0.04, and the 1/x key produces that in one click whenever the divisor scales to a clean 2, 4, 5, 8, or 10.

Skip the calculator when by-hand is faster

The strongest speed technique is not using the machine. Options with obvious factors, fractions that reduce before they multiply, percentages built from 10% blocks: all faster in the head than through the mouse.
